Welcome to Sudbury

Sudbury is much more than its rich mineral deposits; it’s a city that blends history, innovation, and a deep love of hockey. Established in 1883 with the transcontinental railway, Sudbury began as a lumbering hub. The late 1800s brought a remarkable discovery: precious metals resulting from a meteor impact 1.8 billion years ago. This transitioned the community into a thriving mining town by the early 1900s. Today, Sudbury is Northern Ontario’s largest city, with a growing population of over 165,000.

While mining remains central to Sudbury’s economy, the city has evolved into a diverse, multicultural hub. It serves as a regional leader in post-secondary education, financial and business services, tourism, health care, research, and government for Northern Ontario and surrounding communities.

Top Attractions and Outdoor Adventures

Sudbury boasts some of Ontario’s premier attractions, including Dynamic Earth, The Big Nickel, and Science North/Imax Theatre. Beyond these landmarks, the area’s natural beauty provides an unparalleled setting for year-round outdoor recreation. The city is home to 330 lakes, including Lake Wanapitei, the world’s largest freshwater lake contained within a single city, and Lake Ramsey, located in the city’s urban core. Sudbury’s commitment to environmental sustainability is globally recognized, with over 40 years of successful re-greening efforts, enhancing the region’s ecological landscape.

Hockey: The Heartbeat of Sudbury

Hockey is more than a pastime in Sudbury—it’s a way of life. The city has a rich hockey legacy, producing countless NHL pioneers, Hall of Famers, and stars. Legends such as Art Ross, Hector (Toe) Blake, George Armstrong, and Eddie Giacomin paved the way, while players like Eddie Shack, Randy Carlyle, Brian Savage, and the Foligno family continue to inspire. On the women’s side, Tessa Bonhomme and Rebecca Johnston have brought pride to Sudbury with their international successes.

Sudbury’s love for hockey thrives through its community programs, local talent development, and events like the All-Ontario Championships. This event not only offers an unforgettable hockey experience but also sets the stage for future stars to shine.
